Eligibility/Skills:

Full-time enrollment in a UW PhD Program, including the PhD program in the Department of Biostatistics or anther program with appropriate quantitative skills in statistics. Priority is given to students enrolled in the Department of Biostatistics to whom the Department has made a multi-year commitment. Students enrolled in a Master's program will be considered for an open position if no qualified PhD students can be identified.

Desired Skills

Experience/Knowledge in clinical trial, causal inference and survival analysis would be helpful, but may not necessarily be required.

Project Description and Job Duties:

The project is motivated by the development of antiretroviral drugs as pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention. Faced with ethical challenges in conducting trials without a placebo, US FDA guidelines recommend the use of "counterfactual placebo" external controls to establish the efficacy of new agents. The project involves development of statistical methods to generating a counterfactual placebo (external follow-up, recency testing, and biomarker of exposure approaches) and to incorporate such a counterfactual placebo to HIV prevention trial designs. The project could potentially lead to publication in statistical method journals.

Compensation:

For students enrolled in the Department of Biostatistics, this position pays $1,645.50 (25%, pre-tax) per month, using bi-monthly paydays.  For students enrolled in a different department, this position will pay according to the policies and rates established by the home department, which can vary according to progress toward the degree and the department's rate structure.  (Check with your department to understand the compensation details specific to your situation.)  Benefits include tuition or UWC2 course fee payments up to 18 credits, as well as some student fees. Residents with qualifying 20 hour/week RA and TA combinations will pay ~$300 in unwaived fees per quarter. Non-residents with qualifying 20 hour/week RA and TA combinations will pay ~$800 in unwaived fees per quarter.

Note:  Compensation rates and tuition and course fee details above assume a quarterly FTE level of 50% across all Academic Student Employee (ASE) appointments.  If a student's quarterly FTE level is less than 50%, then they may be required to receive a higher salary rate while paying tuition or course fees out-of-pocket.  Compensation details may also be affected by other concurrent appointments, such as fellowships, training grant appointments, and other stipends.  Please contact your home department to understand your particular circumstances.
