Professor of Biostatistics and Statistics Jon Wakefield is a member of the WHO Technical Advisory Group on COVID-19 Mortality Assessment. In this role he, along with biostatistics PhD student Serge Aleshin-Guendel, developed a model to estimate excess mortality in Europe and the Americas in 2020, to inform the true COVID-19 death toll in these regions.

A recently released report outlines the model and provides estimates for Europe and the Americas. Work continues and additional results will be reported to the United Nations General Assembly in September.
