Founded in 1970, the Department of Biostatistics is a recognized leader in the statistical sciences. Its 78 faculty include a Member of the United States National Academy of Sciences, two Members of the Institute of Medicine and 20 Fellows of the American Statistical Association. Our postdoctoral and graduate students are among the most talented in the country, and 488 alumni hold leadership roles in academia, government and industry worldwide. The Department is a center of excellence for development and application of statistical methodology across the health sciences, and has collaborative partnerships with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Children’s Hospital Research Institute, Group Health Cooperative, and the Veteran’s Administration. To complement our research, we recently established the Center for Biomedical Statistics to provide consulting and collaborative services. For additional information, please explore our website or

Cathy Laurie, Biostatistics Principal Senior Research Scientist, and many other Biostatistics colleagues published an important study in the most recent edition of
Nature Genetics. By careful statistical analysis of DNA intensity data from over 50,000 subjects, the research demonstrates the existence of large-scale chromosomal anomalies that arise during our lifetimes, and that increase our risks for some cancers. Other UW Biostatistics faculty and staff on the project include Patrick Heagerty, Ken Rice, Bruce Weir, Siiri Bennett, David Crosslin, Stephanie Gogarten, Cecelia Laurie, David Levine, Sarah Nelson, Jess Shen and Jenna Udren. Biostatistics graduate students Matt Conomos, Caitlin McHugh, Leila Zelnick and Xiuwen Zheng are also co-authors, as well as Gail Jarvik from the UW Division of Medical Genetics. You can read about the paper, and a coordinated submission from the National Cancer Institute, as well as find a link to the paper
