Founded in 1970, the Department of Biostatistics is a recognized leader in the statistical sciences. Its 83 faculty include a Member of the United States National Academy of Sciences, three Members of the Institute of Medicine and 20 Fellows of the American Statistical Association. Our postdoctoral and graduate students are among the most talented in the country, and 562 alumni hold leadership roles in academia, government and industry worldwide. The Department is a center of excellence for development and application of statistical methodology across the health sciences, and has collaborative partnerships with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Children’s Hospital Research Institute, Group Health Research Institute, and the Veteran’s Administration. To complement our research, the Center for Biomedical Statistics was established to provide consulting and collaborative services. NEWS

Congratulations to Professor Brian Leroux, for his election as Fellow of the American Statistical Association. Brian joined our department as a Research Assistant Professor in 1991. He is now Professor of Oral Health Sciences and Professor of Biostatistics. He has an extensive publication record and has made frequent contributions to our department’s teaching program.

Dr. Siobhan Brown, staff member of the Department of Biostatistics and working as a Research Scientist at the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium Data Coordinating Center, and Dr. Scott Emerson are the first place winners in the ASA Biopharmaceutical Section‘s “Best Contributed Paper” at the 2012 Joint Statistical Meetings. Their paper was titled “Active Control Trials with Adaptive Modification of Margin to Address Nonconstancy.”

Congratulations to UW Biostatistics graduate student Arend Voorman who won a 2013 David P. Byar Travel Award from the American Statistical Association for co-authoring a paper on "Graph Estimation with Joint Additive Models" with Daniela Witten and Ali Shojaie.

Congratulations to UW Biostatistics graduate student Megan Smith for being a finalist for the Best Student Paper competition at the 2013 Society for Clinical Trials Annual Meeting.
