ADMISSION PROCEDURES (M.S., M.P.H., Ph.D.)
Prerequisite Information
Potential M.S. and Ph.D. students may enter the Graduate Program in Biostatistics from an undergraduate major in mathematics, statistics, or a biological field. Students are occasionally admitted with backgrounds in other fields; however, all applicants should have the equivalent of 30 or more quarter credits in mathematics and statistics, which must include:
- approximately two years of calculus (must cover multivariate calculus)
- one course in linear algebra
- one course in probability theory
- First-year calculus: MATH 124-125-126
- Advanced calculus: MATH 324 and/or 326
- Linear algebra: MATH 308 or 318
- Probability: MATH 394 and/or 395
MPH applicants: To be considered for
admission to the Biostatistics MPH pathway, a candidate must hold a
doctoral level degree in another field (e.g., M.D., Ph.D., J.D.) or be
currently working on such a doctoral degree. Candidates who have not
yet been awarded a doctoral degree will not be awarded the
Biostatistics pathway MPH until they are awarded their doctoral degree.
All other prerequisites and required materials are the same for M.S.,
M.P.H.,
and Ph.D. applicants.
Application Information
Applications for Autummn 2009 admission should be submitted online
through the Graduate School Application Web Site: https://www.grad.washington.edu/applForAdmiss/.The deadline for completion of the application is January 5, 2009. We do not accept applications for any quarter other than Autumn.
A complete application consists of:
- Online application and payment of $50 application fee
- Online submission of Statement of Purpose
- Online submission of GRE score (all applicants), and TOEFL score (most international applicants*)
- Online submission of three letters of recommendation**
- Optional: online submission of resume if seeking a financial assistantship (RA/TA, Traineeship)
- Hard-copy submission of OFFICIAL transcripts to the department
(international applicants must also send hard copy transcripts to the
Graduate Admissions Office)
*The following are exempt from taking the TOEFL: Applicants who are citizens of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or the United Kingdom, and Non-United States citizens who have received a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited U.S. institution within the U.S. or from an accredited institution in the countries listed.
**If your recommenders must send hard-copy letters, they should be addressed to the Department at: Graduate Program in Biostatistics, Campus Box 357232, University of Washington, Seattle WA 98195-7232. We strongly encourage recommenders to use the online submission of letters through the Graduate Admissions application web site.
