OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS ARE NOT REQUIRED. You may send unofficial transcripts via the online application system.
* The following are exempt from taking the TOEFL or IELTS: Applicants who hold either a bachelor’s, master's, or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or from an institution in Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, or the United Kingdom.
Applicants who can provide documentation verifying that their undergraduate degree is from an institution (in a country other than those listed above) where all instruction is in English are also exempt. For all others, a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or MLT (Michigan Language Test) is required. Test scores are valid for two years and must be valid on the date the application is submitted. For more information on English language requirements, please see the Graduate School's Memorandum No. 8.
** If your recommenders prefer to send hard-copy letters, they should be addressed to the Department at the address given above. We STRONGLY encourage recommenders to use the online submission of letters through the Graduate Admissions application website. Mailing hard-copy letters may DELAY the processing of your application.
IMPORTANT:
You do NOT need to wait for all of your recommenders to submit their letters before you submit your application. They may send in letter anytime during the process. We cannot view any part of your application until it is submitted (fee paid), and we cannot match test scores to it until it is submitted. You should submit your application as soon as possible after you have uploaded your Statement of Purpose, CV, transcripts, and designated your recommenders.
