Graduate student Kelsey Grinde was awarded the Gertrude M. Cox Scholarship by the American Statistical Association (ASA). In announcing the award, ASA cited Grinde’s productive and promising research in statistical genetics and related topics, outstanding volunteer participation and efforts to improve mentoring opportunities in her local community, and leadership in recruiting young students to pursue statistical fields.
Grinde’s area of research is the development of statistical methods for determining the genetic causes of disease in admixed populations such as African Americans and Hispanic Americans, according to Professor Sharon Browning, her PhD advisor.
“Her research will help to ensure that the benefits of genetic studies will be realized in these populations. Kelsey has exceptional ability to get into the details of the statistical theory of her work while also holding on to the bigger picture and understanding the implications of her research,” said Browning
The Cox Scholarship is sponsored by the ASA Committee on Women in Statistics and Caucus for Women in Statistics and was established in 1989 to encourage more women to enter statistically oriented professions. Two scholarships are awarded each year: one to a woman in or entering the early stages of graduate training (MS or PhD) and one to a woman in a more advanced stage of training.
