Presentation: Building a Scientific Online Presence
2019-2020 Student-Invited Speaker: Sherri Rose, PhD, Associate Professor of Health Care Policy (Biostatistics), Harvard Medical School
Abstract: There are many avenues available for sharing research, teaching materials, academic advice, and other resources online. These range from institution-hosted websites to managing multiple accounts across many platforms (e.g., Twitter, YouTube, etc). Engaging in academic and scientific communities online can have unique benefits, especially for early career scholars. In this student-centered presentation we will discuss several general considerations for creating and growing an online presence, including 1) tailoring the time investment and style to suit individual scholars, 2) managing the pros and cons of various platforms, 3) strategies for sharing content to maximize interest, and 4) translating online interactions into career-building opportunities.
