Additional Requirements
IMPORTANT: Students must email the GPA (gitanag@uw.edu) regarding their wish to follow the Statistical Genetics Ph.D. Pathway Degree.
Department Policy on Waiving Course Requirements
In order to facilitate more rapid progress through the programs of study administered by the Department of Biostatistics, the departmental faculty will consider petitions for waiving required coursework as described by the policy guidelines given below.
The overarching principles of this policy are:
-
That the students, through prior comparable coursework at other institutions, have acquired mastery of the overwhelming majority of material taught in the course to be waived,
- That the students will pursue more advanced coursework in the general area of the course being waived,
- That by waiving the coursework, the students will be able to make more rapid progress toward completion of the degree, and
- That any decision to grant the petition for a waiver will be formally documented by the students’ academic advisors, a committee administering a placement exam and/or the current instructors for the course, and the graduate program office for the department. Such documentation must be completed prior to the quarter that the student would normally take the waived course.
General Policy
- In general, no students will be allowed a waiver of the requirements to take the advanced core courses in the PhD pathway. Hence: all PhD students are required to take STAT 581-582-583 and BIOST 570. Students in the Standard Pathway are required to take BIOST 571-572. Students in the Statistical Genetics Pathway are required to take BIOST 550-551-552.
- In general, no students will be allowed a waiver of the requirements for biostatistical consulting (BIOST 590).
- In general, no students will be allowed a waiver of the requirements for 9 credits in departmental seminars (BIOST 580 or BIOST 581, depending on pathway).
- In general, no students will be allowed a waiver of the requirement for electives with a methodologic emphasis (Elective List One).
- In general, no students will be allowed a waiver of the requirement for electives with a biology or public health emphasis (Elective List Two), except as noted for the Statistical Genetics Pathway, where some prerequisite courses and required courses in genetics and genome sciences can be used to satisfy these requirements.
- A student who enters the program with a prior master’s degree in statistics or biostatistics can petition to have selected first year required core coursework waived.
a. The conditions under which each specific course might be waived will need to be approved by: 1) the student’s academic advisor, 2) a committee administering a placement exam and/or the current instructor of the course to be waived, and 3) the graduate program office. b. Typical conditions under which each specific course might be waived are provided below.
Only in the most extraordinary circumstances can the above general policy be waived for an individual student, and then only if agreed by the faculty as a whole.
Conditions for Waiving Specific Courses
- BIOST 514/515 - Students entering the PhD program may petition for the requirements for BIOST 514/515 to be waived if all of the following are agreed to by the academic advisor, the current instructor of BIOST 514, and the departmental graduate program office:
1) The student has a master’s degree in biostatistics or statistics or the equivalent from another institution
2) The student’s curriculum at that other institution included comparable coursework that covered the overwhelming majority of the material taught in BIOST 514/515
3) The student will instead take BIOST 536/537 or similar courses with an applied emphasis (any of these courses may count as List 1 electives with a methodologic emphasis).
- STAT 512/513 - Students entering the PhD program may petition for the requirements for STAT 512/513 to be waived if all of the following are agreed to by the academic advisor, a committee administering a placement exam, and the departmental graduate program office:
1) The student has a master’s degree in biostatistics or statistics or the equivalent from another institution
2) The student’s curriculum at that other institution included comparable coursework that covered the overwhelming majority of the material taught in STAT 512/513 and at the level of rigor it is taught at the University of Washington
3) The student has passed the MS theory placement exam at the PhD level
4) The student has the necessary mathematical and statistical knowledge to proceed directly to take STAT 581/582/583 instead.
- BIOST 533 - Students entering the PhD program may petition for the requirements for BIOST 533 to be waived if all of the following are agreed to by the academic advisor, the most recent instructor of BIOST 533, and the departmental graduate program office:
1) The student has a master’s degree in biostatistics or statistics or the equivalent from another institution
2) The student’s curriculum at that other institution included comparable coursework that covered the overwhelming majority of the material taught in STAT 533 and at the level of rigor it is taught at the University of Washington
3) The student has the necessary mathematical and statistical knowledge to proceed directly to instead take BIOST 570 during his/her first year in the program (this will generally mean that the student has also waived STAT 512/513 and BIOST 514/515).
