Staff Positions
Research Scientist/Engineer-Senior
The Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington has long been prominent nationally and internationally. Through support provided by NIH-sponsored training grants, the Division has one of the largest and most well-known postdoctoral training programs in the United States.
Our DIVISION OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH SCIENTIST/ENGINEER-SENIOR.
The successful applicant will serve as the Director for the recently funded CFAR Network for Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) and as the Associate Director for the Center for AIDS Research (UW CFAR) Biostatistics Core.
Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will develop the infrastructure and operations
of the Biostatistics Core for the CNICS research project, a recently
funded initiative which combines data bases on clinical visits of HIV
infected patients from 8 CFAR sites with the primary goal of creating a
database “laboratory” for clinical and statistical research on HIV
infected patients in clinical care in the US. S/he will also provide
daily oversight of the staff and research projects of the CFAR
Biostatistics Core which collaborates with UW clinical and laboratory
researchers in a variety of research projects.
The successful applicant will be responsible for developing the infrastructure and statistical research activities for the CNICS research project; will represent the CNICS biostatistics core on conference calls and at CNICS meetings; will develop and chair the CNICS Biostatistics working group; and will attend and present research findings at national research meetings. The successful applicant will also collaborate with UW CFAR clinical and laboratory investigators to properly formulate statistical solutions to research questions, assign and supervise the work of Masters level statisticians and programmers to complete statistical work for these projects, identify and solve more complex statistical problems, and collaborate with the CFAR Biostatistics Core director on developing novel statistical methods for the most complex projects as needed. S/he will participate in CFAR Executive Committee Meetings.
The successful applicant, in collaboration with the CFAR Biostatistics Core director and the CNICS Executive Committee will identify the primary needs of the newly formed CNICS Biostatistics Core and develop infrastructure and staffing which will meet these needs, including chairing the Biostatistics working group which will provide a mechanism for communication between statisticians at participating CNICS sites. S/he will manage the statistical components of multiple research projects which will in some cases require the use of sophisticated statistical techniques and development of novel statistical methods. S/he will oversee the work of Masters level statisticians and programmers to insure that all activities of both the CFAR and CNICS Biostatistics Cores remain on schedule. This includes conducting and coordinating detailed phases of the work on multiple projects; interfacing with UW CFAR and national CNICS researchers to identify statistical components of existing and proposed projects; providing required statistical support for these projects; identifying statistical colleagues with expertise relevant to complex specific problems as needed; and coordinating feedback and communication with clinical and laboratory researchers to complete the proposed research projects. S/he will identify opportunities for new statistical methods development; pursue this methods development in collaboration with the CFAR Biostatistics Core director and other core members; attend and present results at both clinical and statistical meetings; participate in external seminars, workshops, professional societies and committees. S/he may initiate new project concepts both in the CFAR and CNICS research communities and seek funding; develop technical proposals and makes presentations to potential collaborators and grant sponsors; and will be responsible for, in collaboration with the CFAR Biostatistics Core Director, writing and presenting reports on core activities to funding agencies and/or other review committees.
The successful applicant will supervise and review the work of a small group of Masters level statisticians and programmers, graduate research associates and trainees.
