What To Do When You Arrive in Seattle (or before your first quarter begins):

  1. Get your UW Net ID at:

    http://www.washington.edu/computing/uwnetid/
  2. Get your student ("Husky") ID card at Schmitz Hall, 2nd floor.
  3. Office space will be assigned annually in early September, and will be announced via the listserv, so make sure you're on there! Once you've been assigned an office, you may pick up keys from our Communications Coordinator, Barbara Jensen, who is at the main office front desk. She usually takes lunch from around 10:45 to 11:45. Email her at: barbj@u.washington.edu or phone the main number (206) 543-1044 to see if she is in. You will need to get an office door key, a key to the F and T-wings, an after-hours building access card and after-hours permit from Barbara.
  4. If you have been awarded financial support (RA, TA, or traineeship) from our department, and you don't know the details yet, contact the Student Services Counselor (Renée Albert, rca@u.washington.edu or 616-6734). If you do have the details, contact the Payroll Coordinator (May Fung, fungm@u.washington.edu or 206-616-7406) to fill out payroll, IRS, and checking (automatic paycheck deposit) forms.
  5. Registration: if you have discussed your schedule with your advisor, you may register on-line via the "My UW" site:

    http://myuw.washington.edu/.

If you haven't discussed classes with your advisor, you should contact him/her when you arrive. Course entry codes and faculty codes are available from the Student Services Assistant (Alex MacKenzie at: alexam@u.washington.edu or 616-6790). Information on registration is also located on our Advising/Grading/Registration web page.
  6. If you hold a Master's degree in Math or Statistics, OR after discussion with your advisor, you and your advisor believe you have had enough math/stat coursework at the Bachelor's level to challenge the first-year statistical theory coursework, please notify Renée Albert that you wish to take the MS Placement Exam. This exam is given during Orientation Week (the week prior to the start of Autumn quarter). The exam covers material in STAT 512 and 513 (Statistical Inference, text by Cassella and Berger).
  7. As soon as known, please give your new local address, phone number, and UW Net ID to Renée and UPDATE your address with the UW Registrar's office on-line at via "My UW" (or see:

    http://www.washington.edu/students/reg/address.html).
  8. Orientation Week: this occurs the week prior to the start of Autumn classes, and includes "welcome" talks by the Graduate Program Director and by the Chair, social events to meet current students and faculty, computer sessions to introduce you to our computer lab, programs, and email, plus a new student photo session. Schedules are usually sent by email, so it's important to get your UW Net ID and get on the Biostat Student Listserv as soon as possible. If you do not hear any news about orientation week by mid-September, please phone or email Renée Albert (616-6734). The first introductory meeting is almost always held on the Monday the week before classes begin, at 10:00am, in our main conference room in Health Sciences Building, F-Wing (F-643).
