DEPARTMENT OF BIOSTATISTICS
Guidelines for Trainee Appointments
The policies for appointment and reappointment to a departmental
training grant are the same as for
graduate student assistantships with the following additions and
exceptions:
- All regulations of the granting agency must be followed. In
particular, USPHS traineeships are restricted to U.S. citizens and
holders of permanent resident visas. Most (but not all) of the trainee
positions are restricted to full time Ph.D. students by agency rules.
- Training grant support is limited to a maximum of five years.
- A prospective trainee should meet with the training grant
director, or discuss by phone, to review the expectations, including
program specific requirements, before accepting such an award. Usually
it is expected that the student will stay on the training grant until
he/she completes the degree, subject to good progress and all other
policies outlined here.
- Trainees are permitted to supplement their stipends up to an
average to the equivalent of a 25% RA/TA per year (10 hours/week).
Where possible, the program will make this available.
