Course Waiver Policy

This policy applies to graduate students who have BIOST 508, 511, or 517 as a degree requirement, and are required by their degree programs to have their course waiver forms signed off by the Department of Biostatistics. We are unable to sign off on course waivers based on syllabi from past coursework; students must take a placement exam as described below:

  • Students who wish to waive BIOST 508 or 511 because of previous course work in biostatistics and take no other BIOST courses are required to take and pass a placement exam covering the BIOST 508/511 material to ensure that they have achieved the competencies taught in the courses. Alternatively, the student may take BIOST 517 instead.
  • Students who wish to waive BIOST 511 and enroll in BIOST 512 are required to take and pass a placement exam covering the BIOST 511 material to ensure that they have achieved the competencies taught in BIOST 511.
  • Students who wish to waive BIOST 517 and enroll in BIOST 518 are required to take and pass a placement exam covering the BIOST 517 material to ensure that they have achieved the competencies taught in BIOST 517.
  • Placement exams are given at the beginning of Autumn Quarter. Students wishing to take the exam must notify the Biostatistics Curriculum Coordinator via email to bcurric@uw.edu no later than September 15, and must identify which course(s) they intend to waive.
